The Bleach series is filled with tons of characters that fans love; from Shinigami to Hollows and even Quincies, a wide range of supernatural characters have been portrayed. While many would expect these characters to command great power and have others at their command, many of them find their abilities lacking and find themselves in unlucky situations.
10 Bleach Arcs That Are Better in the Manga
The Bleach anime did a good job of adapting its source material, but some arcs are better experienced in the original manga.
Oftentimes, only the core characters in Bleach are blessed with a great deal of luck that allows them to survive what would normally be instant death. Their enemies, on the other hand, don’t often have such luck. One slip-up is all it takes to be yanked away from the narrative. Of the many unlucky characters, some are more unlucky than others.
6 Coyote Starrk
Espada Number 1
The first Espada in Aizen’s Arrancar army was a strong man who desired to be weak. His spiritual power was so immense that other hollows died just by being around him. While he never did this intentionally, such was Starrk’s power. Because other hollows died for being around him, Starrk desired to be weak as a sense of loneliness overwhelmed him.
To find a companion for himself, Starrk split himself into two, and his counterpart, Lilynette Gingerbuck, was born. Even after her birth, Starrk still felt an overwhelming loneliness, and so he joined Aizen’s army, looking for allies. Unlike the other Espada, Starrk was not particularly driven towards destroying anything and simply wanted to be around people. His ill luck only came from being unable to find the right strong people, and he was killed as a result.
5 Szayelaporro Granz
As a former member of Aizen’s Arrancar army, Szayelaporro’s story is one of grace to grass. In Aizen’s Arrancar army, Szayelaporro could’ve been called the scientist of the group. He sought to reach perfection using science; however, that in itself was a contradiction. In his attempt to reach perfection, Szayelaporro performed various cruel experiments using people as nothing more than livestock to be experimented on. His cruel and sadistic nature was on display for all to see, and when he faced Mayuri, a fellow scientist and the 12th division captain of the Gotei 13, he met his match.
Bleach: 10 Most Ruthless Characters
Explore the most bloodthirsty and cold-hearted individuals in Bleach and the unforgivable statements they have each made along the way.
In Szayelaporro’s battle against Mayuri, Mayuri used a drug that paralyzed Szayelaporro’s physical body while accelerating his mind. With his mind accelerated, Szayelaporro was trapped in his body for centuries. While Szayelaporro might have deserved his eventual death, dying with his mind trapped in his body for centuries was certainly an unlucky end.
4 Bambietta Basterbine
As a member of Yhwach’s sternritter, Bambietta Basterbine is a powerful and sadistic Quincy. To vent her frustration, she is not above killing her male subordinates for ‘special relief.’ With her power, The Explode, Bambietta makes bombs out of anything she touches. This makes her particularly suited to large-scale battles where she can easily destroy her surroundings.
Despite being an all-powerful Quincy, Bambietta was pushed near death by Sajin Komamura. At death’s door, the Quincy was killed by her ally Giselle Gewelle, who did so to ‘save’ her. Despite being someone who highly valued her life, Bambietta was turned into a zombie who could only live for Giselle Gewelle, a supposed ally. While her death could’ve been relatively honorable, she was turned into a slave, and not even by an enemy.
3 Retsu Unohana
The First Kenpachi
The kind healer Unohana was one of Soul Society’s most experienced captains, and her healing abilities were second to none. Because of her calm and kind disposition, many underestimated the healer; however, as the first person to bear the name Kenpachi, Unohana was certainly a strong combatant.
Bleach: The 8 Oldest Characters
Bleach is full of characters who have been around for centuries. Here are the eight oldest.
An ironclad rule in the Bleach series is that there can only be one Kenpachi per generation, and the former must be killed by a successor for the title to be inherited. Such was Unohana’s fate. While she did indeed pass on willingly and without regrets, Unohana died even though she was stronger than many, simply because she wasn’t the strongest.
2 Sajin Komamura
The Anthropomorphic Wolf
As a member of the Wolf clan, Komamura was chastised and made fun of because of his appearance. Many likened him to a dog, and Komamura was deeply scarred by these times until he was taken in by the former captain commander of the Gotei 13, Shigekuni Yamamoto.
During the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, to face the overwhelming power of Yhwach and his army, Komamura went to learn the humanization technique from his great-grandfather. With the humanization technique, Komamura would turn into a human for a short while and gain incredible power as a result. However, after using the technique, Komamura was turned into a wolf as the price he paid for immense power. Even with the power he gained, Komamura could only defeat his opponent, and not end the war, before being rendered powerless.
1 Gremmy Thoumeaux
With his power, The Visionary, Gremmy Thoumeaux, was one of the most powerful Sternritters in Yhwach’s army. The Visionary makes anything Gremmy imagines become reality. Whether it be turning into a giant or making a comet fall, Gremmy was a versatile combatant whose only weakness was his own imagination.
Despite such power, Gremmy lost because he imagined Kenpachi being a monster. While he did manage to injure Kenpachi, Gremmy lost immediately when he ‘imagined’ his power to be inferior to Kenpachi’s. He tried to imagine his power being as great as Kenpachi’s, and his body tore apart as his vessel wasn’t strong enough. To sum it up, Gremmy killed himself as a consequence of his own imagination, truly an unlucky event.
