AI-powered platform to provide Walmart customers with healthy eating insights

US retail giant Walmart has launched an AI-powered platform designed to encourage its customers eat healthier.

Everyday Health Signals allows customers to connect their online Walmart account to AI-driven insights to improve their wellbeing.

Once customers opt in, the platform analyses their Walmart.com retail history to deliver practical tips, such as nutrition analysis and shopping lists.

The platform was built by Walmart using a custom-built personalisation engine, with the company claiming it is the first of its kind.

Walmart said the platform takes the guesswork out of healthy eating, quoting research from data company Statista which found that around half of Americans are trying to make healthier eating choices. When presented with healthier food options, the firm found that people make better choices.

Walmart said the platform will initially be made available to Medicare Advantage members with NationsBenefits, which will allow eligible members to receive free, personalised guidance that aligns with their wellness goals.

The business is also planning to expand the platform to include more health plans and benefits managers.

“By allowing customers the opportunity to make more informed choices with Walmart Everyday Health Signals, we’re creating the opportunity for widespread health impact,” said Pravene Nath, MD, group director, consumer health and data solutions, Walmart US. “We’re innovating with tech-enabled health solutions that equip customers with a better understanding of how small decisions in the grocery aisle can help improve their overall health.”
