Meta signs new clean energy deal to boost AI development

Meta Platforms has signed four more clean energy agreements with Invenergy, the two companies said on Thursday.

Based in Chicago, Invenergy develops, builds, owns and operates large-scale generation, transmission and storage facilities for clean energy and other renewable sources in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The agreement will provide Meta with an additional 791 megawatts (MW) of purchased solar and wind power, which will be used to support Meta’s operations, data centre growth and clean energy goals, Meta said.

The agreements come after the two companies had previously signed an agreement to supply Meta with 1,000 MW of total energy purchased from Invenergy.

Together, these projects bring the two companies’ partnership to a total of 1,800 MW, including more than 740 MW of new power generation in Ohio.

Meta said the electricity generated by these projects will supply the local grid, while Meta will receive the clean energy credits associated with the new generation capacity coming online.

Urvi Parekh, Meta’s head of global energy, stressed how Meta’s focus is currently on advancing its AI ambitions. “We’re grateful for Invenergy’s longtime partnership that helps us support our energy needs and implement our clean energy goals, and look forward to continued collaboration,” she added.

Ted Romaine, Invenergy’s executive vice president of Origination, emphasised winning the AI race requires reliable, cleaner, affordable and energy infrastructure.

“We’re grateful for our continued relationship with Meta and look forward to future partnerships as we work to strengthen American energy independence and economic prosperity,” he added.

Invenergy and its subsidiaries have developed more than 34,000 megawatts of projects including natural gas production, solar and wind power, transmission infrastructure, and advanced energy storage projects, the company said on its website.
