Supermaterials and lithium-sulphur battery manufacturer Lyten is taking full ownership of Northvolt’s Dwa ESS in Gdansk, Poland, the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility in Europe.
Powered by renewable energy, the site includes a 270,000 sq ft BESS manufacturing and research and development facility (R&D) and is equipped to produce up to six GWh of energy storage capacity and to expand to over 10 GWh in the future.
Lyten said it is planning to immediately restart production in Gdansk to resume sales of battery energy storage systems (BESS) after the facility closed in November last year.
The closure followed Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt’s filing for bankruptcy in March 2024 due to financial difficulties resulting from rising capital costs, geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions, the firm said.
“We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland and deliver on existing and new customer orders,” said Dan Cook, chief executive at Lyten.
With the agreement, Lyten seeks to expand its lithium sulphide battery developments in Europe and increase its production capacity to meet the growing market demands of BESS.
“The message we are hearing clearly from European customers is that they want energy storage systems manufactured in Europe using locally sourced supply chains free of geopolitical risk,” said Lars Herlitz, Lyten chairman and co-founder.
Lyten’s lithium-sulphur batteries are already being used commercially in drones. The company said it is also pursuing partnerships for wider applications in logistics, aviation and defence.
Last year, Lyten’s technology was chosen by Chrysler from Stellantis for its Halcyon Concept electric vehicle.
Lithium-sulphide batteries have specific characteristics that make them ideal for meeting the rapidly growing demand for BESS, including a wider operating temperature range – particularly in hot conditions – increased safety, and the ability to be made from low-cost materials that are abundantly available in the US and Europe.
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
