Amazon pledges €1bn towards Belgium logistics expansion

Amazon will invest €1 billion in Belgium by 2027 to build out logistics infrastructure, enable same‑day delivery, and deepen support for small and medium‑sized enterprises selling on its marketplace, according to local and international reports and statements made during a Belgian trade mission to California.

The company plans to develop new capacity and recruit additional staff, including roles in mechatronics at its Hamme research centre, while continuing operations at its Antwerp delivery facility. Amazon employs about 400 people in Belgium and has invested roughly €800 million over the past decade, Belgian business daily L’Echo reported. The investment also includes strengthening partnerships across the delivery network, notably with postal operator bpost, while diversifying logistics to meet faster service expectations. Reuters said Amazon’s objective is to enhance its supply chains to offer same‑day delivery nationwide.

Eva Faict, Amazon’s country manager for Belgium and the Netherlands, said consumer demand is clear. “When customers see that a product can be delivered in one day instead of two, they order more,” she told De Tijd, highlighting the commercial uplift from improved delivery speeds and the flywheel effect for sellers on the platform. RetailDetail EU also reported that Amazon will expand data functionalities available to Belgian SMEs to help them scale cross‑border.

Faict confirmed that bpost remains central to the logistics strategy. “They are our most important partner now and will remain so,” she said, adding that same‑day delivery will require investments throughout the chain and that “Amazon Logistics will not do it alone.”

Political leaders welcomed the announcement, citing benefits for innovation and local industry. Flemish minister‑president Matthias Diependaele said the plan recognises the region’s strengths. “Amazon’s decision to invest here is direct recognition of our innovative strength,” he noted, pointing to the focus on robotics and mechatronics and the broader technology sector impact. Federal minister for small businesses and SMEs, Eléonore Simonet, said the marketplace opportunity can help local firms grow internationally. “We can see how this leverage can help local entrepreneurs strengthen their market presence and even expand beyond borders,” she said.

Same‑day delivery could begin within months, according to Belgian media, with the programme expected to increase order frequency and widen selection for Belgian customers. The company said the initiative will also expand services for SMEs through greater access to data and tools that can improve route planning, fulfilment, and customer experience.
