It’s official: A Mortal Kombat III is coming.

Announced at the New York Comic Con panel for the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he was already in the process of writing the script for a third movie.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie,” said Slater, who penned Mortal Kombat II. “They are so excited, they are so convinced that there is a giant fanbase waiting for it, they’ve already hired me to start writing the next installment.”

But first, Mortal Kombat II. The sequel to the 2021 movie will release May 16, 2026, after being pushed back from its original fall 2025 date. Director Simon McQuoid addressed the date change at the NYCC, calling the movie a “victim of [its] own success,” a sentiment he had expresssed over the summer after seeing the reactions to the movie’s test screenings.

“Every time people have seen this movie, it gained momentum,” McQuoid said. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat as the movie and the franchise is just gonna kick off summer next year. Yes, we have to wait but it’s gonna feel massive. That’s the reason.”

Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford – who play Johnny Cage, Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn, respectively – joined Slater and McQuoid at the panel. They’re beefing up a returning cast of basically everyone from the first movie: Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica MacNamee, Joe Taslim, and lots more. Brush up on the full cast of characters confirmed for Mortal Kombat II.

Outside of the MKIII announcement, the panel also screened a behind-the-scenes featurette (which you can watch below) and the first look at a fight scene between Baraka and Johnny Cage, who shows up with Lu Kang, Sonya, and Jax in tow to convince Baraka that they should team up against the villain Shao Khan. It’s basically Johnny Cage’s don-the-batsuit moment with his iconic sunglasses.
