Turtle Beach is updating its Nintendo Switch 2-licensed Rematch RGB Wireless Gaming Controller line with a couple of new controllers that feature light-up designs, one of which gives some much-needed love to everyone’s favorite cosmic mother figure, Rosalina. Alongside the new controllers, the company also announced a new glow-in-the-dark PlayTrek travel case for the Switch 2.
The controllers aren’t the first themed Rematch controllers the company has released for the Switch 2, but they look to have some of the coolest lighting effects I’ve seen on a controller. Key parts of the artwork on each are backlit, a glowy technique that looks similar to the one used in the patterned RGB lights of the Turtle Beach Afterglow Wave I reviewed recently.
The Rosalina controller shows the character as a render that looks about the same as we first saw her in Super Mario Galaxy. She stands against a backdrop of light blue and white, with a smattering of blue and yellow stars sprinkled throughout and a silhouette of her space palace that served as Galaxy’s hub world. With the backlight on, the stars and the castle glow. There’s also a “Koopa Troop” controller that shows Bowser and his minions pursuing Mario against a silver backdrop with a simple, 70s-style set of earth-tone gradient stripes near the bottom. The characters all glow when the backlight is flipped on.
Specs-wise, these are fairly straightforward alternatives to the Switch 2 Pro controller that feature drift-resistant tunneling magnetoresistance, or TMR, sticks, motion controls, and all the buttons you’d expect to see on Nintendo’s first-party controller, down to the C-button. That said, they won’t have rumble or be able to wake the Switch 2. Turtle Beach says they’ll last for up to 40 hours on a charge, and can stay connected to your Switch or Switch 2 via Bluetooth from up to 30 feet away. Missing rumble and console means they’re not the best Switch 2 controller you can get, but they’ll probably feel a lot like the Afterglow Wave, making them very solid Player 2 options.
As for the “Koopa Troop” PlayTrek travel case, it features the same hand-drawn 2D artwork as the Koopa Troop controller, but otherwise it’s pretty standard fare – the industry has been pretty settled on how a Switch 2 travel case ought to look and function. Here, that means it has a compartment for your Switch 2, a flap with elastic strips to hold your physical game cartridges, and a zip-up pocket in the top lid for holding small Switch 2 accessories. The case has no built-in lights of its own, but if you flip off the lights, you’ll see the outline of the clustered characters is printed with glow-in-the-dark ink.
All of these accessories are up for preorder now. The Rosalina and Koopa Troop Rematch controllers will be available on May 4 for $64.99, while the new Koopa Troop PlayTrek will be $29.99 and comes out on June 14.
