Super Mario Movie’s Charlie Day Wants Luigi’s Mansion Spinoff

Super Mario Movie’s Charlie Day Wants Luigi’s Mansion Spinoff

Is Nintendo planning a Luigi’s Mansion film following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie? Charlie Day, the voice of Luigi, has said it would be a good idea and he’d be keen to take part.

This week’s launch of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks set to extend Nintendo’s cinematic universe ever further, with the introduction of space princess Rosalina and numerous characters not from the Mushroom Kingdom, such as the previously confirmed Star Fox, Pikmin, and ROB.

But as Nintendo assembles its characters on the big screen in this new Mario sequel, there’s an expectation from fans that spinoffs are also likely on the way. And what could be better than a movie version of Luigi’s Mansion, the spooky GameCube classic that’s since spawned a number of sequels?

“I would be thrilled to do Luigi’s Mansion, just because it’s such a fun game,” Day told Screenrant. “And not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun.

“It does seem like it would make a great movie,” Day continued, “but they don’t put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason. I got no idea. I wouldn’t want the [studio boss] job, personally. Don’t give me that. Yeah, it’d be a lot of pressure. But if they do [Luigi’s Mansion], I’m in.”

It’s not the first time that a Luigi’s Mansion spinoff has been discussed, though word of it actually happening has been thin on the ground. Back in 2023, Mario voice actor Chris Pratt said there had been “talk of Luigi’s Mansion” when teasing where the Mario movie series could go next — presumably before Nintendo decided to ultimately take the franchise to the stars.

Could Luigi’s Mansion be the Mario movie series’ first side-story? It’s possible, though one other long-rumored possibility feels more imminent. Last summer, a Nintendo trademark for an unannounced Donkey Kong movie was spotted following earlier rumblings that DK was getting his own solo picture at some point in the future.

Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong was a prominent part of the original Super Mario Movie but, perhaps tellingly, there’s been no suggestion to date that he’s back for the sequel. Is Nintendo now saving the ape for his own film in the future? The idea does not seem bananas.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters this Wednesday, April 1, and will likely provide more clues on where the series is set to go next.
