Game of Thrones: Dragonfire Video Game Announced

Warner Bros. Games has announced Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, a new free-to-play mobile strategy game set during the era of House of the Dragon.

Set to fly onto iPhones and Android devices later this year, fans can now pre-register their interest for bonuses when the game does eventually land. There’s also a slick-looking CGI trailer featuring the likeness of Emma D’Arcy, better known as Rhaenyra Targaryen, hatching dragon eggs and moving her forces around a map of the Seven Kingdoms.

“Only flame and blood will claim the Iron Throne,” the Targaryen says. “The blood of the dragon now awakens in you. Seize your destiny, join the fray, conquer — or burn.” The trailer ends with a brief snippet of gameplay, showing a dragon flitting around a castle, setting it aflame.

“Game of Thrones: Dragonfire introduces a fresh, strategic approach to conquering the Seven Kingdoms through tile-based warfare set during an era defined by the power of dragons,” reads a blurb on the game’s official website. “Drawing inspiration from events portrayed in House of the Dragon, players will experience a new narrative as a Valyrian descendant tasked with hatching and raising dragons, building and commanding armies, forming alliances and factions, and engaging in tactical battles to become the dominant force in Westeros.”

While you’ll be playing as a new character, the website includes character profiles for some more familiar faces — suggesting that you’ll be able to rub shoulders with Rhaenyra and Aemond Targaryen, as well as Corlys Velaryon and Alicent Hightower.

More detailed blogs reveal that the game will feature eight-week seasons, known as Reigns, each of which will feature campaigns and events. These can build to a major story beat such as invading King’s Landing, with the end result of a campaign strengthening your dragon brood for future battles.

Pre-registration is now live, with some ambitious-sounding targets. At 1 million pre-registrations, six banner maker sigils will be unlocked for players when the game launches. At 2 million, players will get 1,000 Runic Fragments. At 5 million, players will unlock two avatars. And at 10 million, the Dawnseeker dragon will be granted.

House of the Dragon originally launched in 2022, and will next continue with the debut of its third season sometime in June. After that, the show will wrap up its story with a fourth season, expected in 2028. For more, check out our 7/10 review of Season 2, and then learn about the behind-the-scenes tensions between Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin and the series’ showrunners. Maybe they should all sit down for a friendly game of Dragonfire?
