The Boys Creator Reacts to Gen V Cancelation

The Boys creator Eric Kripke has insisted he wasn’t behind the cancelation of spinoff Gen V amid a backlash that has spilled over onto his social media.

Gen V, which made its debut on Prime Video in September 2023, is set at the Godolkin University, where young supes work with and against each other in the hopes of being drafted into a superhero team. Last week, Amazon confirmed that Gen V would not return for a third season. “While we wish we could keep the party going another season at Godolkin, we’re committed to continuing the Gen V characters’ stories in The Boys Season 5 and other VCU projects on the horizon,” said Kripke and executive producer Evan Goldberg at the time. “You’ll see them again.”

Still, that hasn’t stopped angry fans from “flooding” Kripke’s social media mentions with insults. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kripke insisted he fought to save the show, but the decision wasn’t his to make.

“I did not cancel the show,” he said. “One, I don’t have the power to do that. Two, I was fighting to keep the show, almost more than anybody else on Earth. So I’m as bummed as everybody else out there.”

He added: “these things are based on business decisions that are above my pay grade, among Amazon. It’s based on amount of viewers versus how expensive the show is to make, and does it make business sense for them, ultimately? And, unfortunately, they decided that it didn’t.”

After Gen V was canceled, Jaz Sinclair, who plays Marie Moreau, teased that she will have plenty to say about Gen V’s cancellation in the future, but for now she wanted to thank the fans. “There’s so much I wanna (and will) say, but for today I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said. “I’m so happy you’re here and I’m so grateful for this incredible experience.”

Sinclair’s character, Marie Moreau, is one of the standouts at Godolkin University and potentially one of the most powerful supes in The Boys universe. Marie can control and weaponize blood, which potentially makes her more powerful than supervillain Homelander. Indeed, some fans had wondered if Marie would end up drafted into The Boys fifth and final season to finally put an end to Homelander’s tyranny, but Kripke cast doubt on the theory after saying she had yet to master her powers.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed, however, that Marie and Jordan Li, played by London Thor, are now set to appear in later episodes of The Boys Season 5 (there are only a few left). But Kripke also has plans to try to find a way to repurpose ideas he had for Gen V Season 3 in some other, future VCU project.

It sounds like part of the idea would focus on Marie learning to control her power. “It’s very early days, because we’re focusing on getting Vought Rising out into the world, but Amazon has expressed an interest and they want to hear more potential stories in the world,” Kripke said. “So we’re internally brainstorming a couple different ideas. We’ll see which ones get traction, but they all have the opportunity to absorb at least some of the Gen V gang, and that’s very much by design.”

With The Boys ending soon, Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico remain in active development. Vought Rising, due out in 2027, is a prequel series starring Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, Mason Dye as Bombsight, Will Hochman as Torpedo, and Elizabeth Posey as Private Angel. Aya Cash is also set to star alongside Ackles by returning as Season 2’s Nazi supervillain, Stormfront.
