Microsoft will further discuss its next-gen Xbox console plans today, with an introduction to Project Helix slated to headline the first Xbox Game Dev Update show.
The broadcast will be available to watch via YouTube at 9am Pacific, 12pm Eastern or 5pm UK time, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for any new announcements.
Microsoft has said its new Xbox Game Dev Update show is designed to highlight the ongoing work within Xbox on its hardware platform, with a focus on the more technical side of things. So, don’t go in expecting to see the next Halo — though that sure would be nice.
The show will begin with a section introducing Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console, currently codenamed Project Helix, presented by Xbox veterans Chris Charla (GM, Portfolio & Programs) and Jason Ronald (VP, Next Generation) — the latter of whom was promoted earlier this week to further oversee Project Helix and the Xbox platform.
“Chris and Jason will walk through the details shared at GDC, offering a closer look at Project Helix and what it represents for the future of Xbox,” a Microsoft blurb for the show reads.
“What does Project Helix mean for developers? It’s powered by a custom AMD-based SoC [system-on-a-chip] and co-designed for the next-generation of DirectX, as part of our ongoing partnership to shape the future of rendering and simulation. Project Helix will create new opportunities for you to optimize build workflows, improve performance, and iterate more efficiently. Xbox is building for what’s next and we’re inviting you to join us on that journey.”
Other sections of the show will focus on new Xbox developer tools, including developer-focused additions to the Xbox Marketplace, plus a discussion on Direct X.
The show’s debut follows a series of changes from freshly-installed Xbox boss Asha Sharma. This has included a notable recommitment to the brand’s next-gen console plans, the removal of the division’s corporate-sounding Microsoft Gaming branding, a shiny new look for the Xbox logo, and a cut to the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (while booting new Call of Duty games from the subscription on day one).
