The Adventures of Cliff Booth Sets IMAX and Netflix Release Dates

David Fincher’s sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is coming to IMAX theaters this fall. Netflix has announced that The Adventures of Cliff Booth will get a two-week exclusive run in IMAX starting November 25th before eventually making its way to Netflix on December 23rd.

It seems that Netflix is positioning the new Brad Pitt film in the same way as its Knives Out sequels, which both got limited theatrical runs before moving to Netflix right before Christmas. Interestingly, The Adventures of Cliff Booth is taking its IMAX release window from Greta Gerwig’s Narnia film, which was recently delayed to February 2027.

Fincher’s last wide-release theatrical film was 2014’s Gone Girl. Ever since then, he has been working with Netflix on TV shows and films, including Mindhunter, Mank, and The Killer. The Killer enjoyed a limited theatrical rollout, but cinephiles have been yearning for Fincher’s return to the big screen, and now he’s returning in a big way.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth was originally conceived by Quentin Tarantino, but the director lost interest in making it. As a result, Pitt brought it to Fincher and was given Tarantino’s blessing to direct it.

Not much is known about the film’s story, but it follows Pitt’s Cliff Booth as a Hollywood fixer in the 1970s. Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly offered a small supporting role in the film, but he declined.

Although DiCaprio won’t return, it’s expected that Timothy Olyphant will reprise his role as James Stacy from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian.

As for Tarantino, he is still searching for his white whale. The acclaimed director has a rule that he will only make ten movies, so as not to jeopardize a strong and succinct filmography. Tarantino told The Church of Tarantino podcast that he walked away from The Adventures of Cliff Booth as he felt it wasn’t different enough from his previous works, and he is hoping to find something that lies in more uncharted territory for his final film.
