Having given us a powerful portrayal of the final days of Wolverine in Logan, Hugh Jackman now turns to another iconic character nearing his end in The Death of Robin Hood, and we got the first look at a new clip this weekend at IGN Live. The clip focuses on this film’s older version of Robin Hood, now pondering his dark life of crime and murder, and finding his past catching up to him in the form an enemy who challenges him in a particular fiery setting.
On hand to speak about the film was director Michael Sarnoski, whose previous work includes the acclaimed Nicolas Cage movie, Pig, and A Quiet Place: Day One. Sarnoski explained how The Death of Robin Hood is a reinterpretation of “The almost millennia old story of the death of Robin Hood, which was one of the earliest myths around Robin Hood in the early ballads. This is kind of a gritty reimagining of that story. What if Robin really were a real human being who was this medieval bandit that had a kind of problematic history, and how would the end of his life look from a from a deeply personal standpoint?”
Sarnoski understands people will think of Logan when seeing Jackman has been cast in this role, but remarked, “What excited Hugh about the movie, and what excited me about Hugh, was that, yes, on the surface, there’s this kind of aging hero dealing with his legacy of violence, but I think he was really excited to boil it down to something more essential to get into action that doesn’t feel superhero action, but feels like just an old man trying desperately to kill someone in the mud.”
In The Death of Robin Hood, Sarnoski said they worked “to design these scenes that don’t feel like these are incredible fighters dancing around, doing all this crazy stuff. These are just people trying not to die. And I think he was excited to try and figure that out, and then try and figure out that transition into the really internal world of this Robin Hood character, and how to show both the intense brutality and violence of this character, and that internal, thoughtful, intelligent, eventually warm character that is hiding beneath that as well. Watching him do something similar, but take it in a completely different direction, was really inspiring,”
Discussing his personal connection to the story, Sarnoski recalled, “As a kid I loved the Disney Robin Hood and I loved the Costner Robin Hood, and then I got this copy of an old Robin Hood book that had the Death of Robin Hood legend in it when I was like 10 years old and it didn’t make sense to me. I was like, ‘Wait a minute, so you’re saying that this dancing fox died,,,?’ I’m trying to figure out how to pair the stories of this adventurer with this very human, spiritual death. That was really fascinating to me.”
