Toy Story 5 looks primed to become another huge hit for Pixar and Disney, after a lucrative preview period.
The animated sequel has notched up $17.5 million in domestic previews, Variety reported, besting music biopic Michael’s recent $12.6 million total to earn the year’s biggest preview performance to date (or, in other words, until next month’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day).
Industry analysts project Toy Story 5 to earn a further $150 million this weekend at the very least, significantly more than the $130 million raked in by Toy Story 4 over its opening few days, and all on top of a further $135 million expected from overseas.
Released back in 2019, Toy Story 4’s box office ultimately topped out at $1 billion, a figure that only one film this year has managed: Nintendo and Illumination’s own Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But with the above figures expected for Toy Story 5’s opening, it looks like Woody and company will dethrone Mario as this year’s biggest animated film soon enough.
Toy Story 5 ticket sales have reportedly been boosted by reviews for the movie, which have been mostly positive — indeed, IGN’s own verdict returned a 7/10. “With a handful of new characters adding some fresh batteries to the mix, and sidelining the right legacy characters at the right time, the fifth installment of Pixar’s main event finds another good way to wrap up,” we wrote in IGN’s Toy Story 5 review. “At least until the inevitable Toy Story 6…”
