Green Yuri Anime Confirms Nirvana for Opening Theme and Dave Grohl Says Kurt Cobain Would Have Loved The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All

CloverWorks has revealed its new anime, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All (a.k.a. Green Yuri), will feature a Nirvana song as its opening theme, and according to Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain would have loved it.

The Japanese animation studio behind popular projects like Black Butler, My Dress-Up Darling, Spy x Family, and more shared a reveal trailer, along with a host of other details, during Anime Expo 2026. An adaptation of the viral X/Twitter manga authored by Sumiko Arai, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All is now set to premiere January 2027, and it’ll come with a little help from legendary grunge outfit Nirvana.

Music lovers will immediately recognize the song featured in the reveal trailer as “Breed,” the fourth track from the band’s reality-altering ’90s album, Nevermind. Green Yuri has officially locked down the rights to use the blistering rock track for its opening theme. Like the manga it’s based on, the anime will feature a list of well-known artists, and thanks to an interview with Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer and frontman for Foo Fighters, it looks like Arai managed to nab some heavy hitters.

Arai personally interviewed Grohl to commemorate the reveal that Breed will be the opening theme for Green Yuri. The “Everlong” songwriter seemed thrilled to give CloverWorks his blessing to use the classic grunge tune, but not as thrilled as the author was to hear him say that Cobain, who fronted Nirvana until his death in 1994, would have loved Green Yuri.

“I think that Kurt definitely would have loved this,” Grohl said. When Arai expressed her excitement, he continued: “Oh, my god, yeah. Of course. This is exactly… It seems like the same message, aesthetic, and the vibe, you know? It’s cool.”

Grohl then reacted to the secret list of songs CloverWorks will feature in Green Yuri, saying things like, “amazing” and “killer” when glancing at just a few of the tracks. An official playlist for Green Yuri features artists like Soundgarden, Radiohead, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and more. If even a sample of that list makes it into the anime, then fans are in for a treat.

“Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop,” an official description shared by Crunchyroll says. “Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him—not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?”

The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All will get the anime treatment early next year. Its staff includes Masashi Ishihama as director, Rino Yamasaki for series composition, and Kanna Hirayama for character design. Mariya Ise will play Mitsuki Koga, and Akari Kito will play Aya Osawa.

“While I’m constantly astonished at every bit of work they’ve done so far, I’m especially touched by their dedication to highlighting the bands and music the characters adore, (You’ll definitely know what I mean when you see it!),” Arai said in a statement. “I can’t wait for your guys to re-meet Mitsuki and Aya (and the rest) in motion, in color, and through the vision of CloverWorks!!”
