DC Reveals New Tag Fighting Game and Injustice Fans Are Confused

Fans have been waiting a long time for a new Injustice game, but it looks like they’ll have to wait a little longer after DC revealed a totally different fighting game… on mobile.

DCKO is an upcoming free-to-play mobile fighting game developed by Drop Fake, Inc., an independent game studio based in British Columbia. Featuring characters from DC Comics, this title is a 2v2 tag fighter with collectible and RPG elements where players can level up their fighters, unlock new stats, and boost their abilities by spending in-game currency. It’s scheduled for release in 2027.

It couldn’t be any more different from NetherRealm’s Injustice games, and that’s what has the fighting game community in knots after DCKO’s announcement trailer released on July 20, 2026.

“DC, this isn’t the time for you to play games and release an Injustice clone. You know what we want,” one commenter wrote on YouTube.

“Should have been the next NetherRealm game,” another said on X.

Others can’t help but reference Multiversus, the multi-property platform fighter published by Warner Bros. Games that was famously delisted just one year after its release. (It’s worth noting that DCKO is both developed and self-published by Drop Fake, Inc., though it is officially licensed through Warner Bros. Game Interactive on behalf of DC.)

It’s been nearly ten years since the last Injustice game released in 2017. Fans have been hoping for a third installation in the franchise since May 2025, when NetherRealm publicly confirmed it would no longer add content to Mortal Kombat 1 in order to focus on the studio’s “next project.”

This project is rumored to be Injustice 3, with MP1st reporting the game is in “active development” at NetherRealm as of April 2026. The game has been all but confirmed by multiple sources, including the voice actors for Superman and Aquaman, who let slip their involvement in the game in now-deleted social media posts, as well as an artist who listed Injustice 3 on their Artstation portfolio.

And on July 16, Ed Boon himself posted a ‘Best Injustice 1 Super Move Tournament’ poll on X, giving fans even more hope that a new DC fighter from NetherRealm is on the way. While DCKO has thrown a confusing wrench in the mix, it doesn’t seem to have interrupted things at NetherRealm, which has known what its next game would be for some time now.
