Dungeons & Dragons Movie Sequel Has Script But Won’t Come Out Due to Financial Reasons

Dungeons & Dragons Movie Sequel Has Script But Won’t Come Out Due to Financial Reasons

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves co-director Jonathan Goldstein says the script for a sequel already exists, but he’s not expecting it to see the light of day any time soon.

The filmmaker behind the 2023 D&D adaptation gave fans an unfortunate update when speaking with ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026. Fans praised the original movie for how it faithfully brought the classic tabletop roleplaying game to the big screen, but it doesn’t sound like its favorable reception from critics and audiences will do much to bring a sequel to life.

“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons,” Goldstein said. “We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”

Those “financial reasons” he mentioned are probably a reference to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ box office returns. Despite rolling into its opening weekend as the number one movie in theaters domestically, its final global total saw it bring in just $205.46 million (via Box Office Mojo). It’s a respectable enough finish on its own, but considering Variety reported the film cost $150 million before factoring in marketing costs, things could have gone much, much better for the D&D movie.

Still, the fact a sequel script was written suggests someone at Paramount was interested in keeping the story going at some point. The original film – which starred Chris Pine (Edgin), Michelle Rodriguez (Holga), Justice Smith (Simon), Sophia Lillis (Doric), Hugh Grant (Forge), and Regé-Jean Page (Xenk) – has certainly managed to garner a group of die-hard fans since its premiere.

Its Rotten Tomatoes scores, for example, sit at 91% from critics and 92% from fans. IGN gave the film a 7/10 review, calling it an “accessible fantasy adventure that both roasts and respects D&D culture without losing newcomers along for the ride.”

With a script on the table and Paramount going through its own changes every day, it’s unclear if Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sequel will ever come to be. Former Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins had previously stated he would be interested in doing a second movie, but only if it could be made “for less.” Pine, meanwhile, said in 2023 that he was “pretty confident” it would happen eventually.
