Michael B. Jordan has given his approval for the casting of David Jonsson as the next Black Panther in the MCU.
Michael B. Jordan attended last night’s premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and amidst the red carpet chaos, he was asked by The Hollywood Reporter about his thoughts on David Jonsson being cast as the next Black Panther. Jordan didn’t hold back his enthusiasm, proclaiming his approval in an excited tone.
“Oh, I love it,” he said. “It’s amazing! I can’t wait, can’t wait!”
Jordan was featured in the first two Black Panther films as Erik Killmonger, a man who aims to take the Wakandan throne and use the country’s advanced technology to disrupt the world. Although Killmonger was killed at the end of the first film, he appeared as part of a hallucination in the second film. Jordan is also a frequent collaborator of director Ryan Coogler. The two worked together on Coogler’s first feature film, Fruitvale Station, and continued their relationship in Creed, Black Panther, and, most recently, Sinners, which earned the pair Oscars.
Coogler is set to helm Black Panther 3 with a December 2028 release in mind. The director was put in a tough situation during the development of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as T’Challa actor Chadwick Boseman unexpectedly died from colon cancer. Instead of recasting the role, Coogler opted to pass the mantle on to the character of Shuri. Now, the role will be passed on to T’Challa’s son, played by Jonsson.
Jonsson’s casting was revealed at San Diego Comic Con and has been met with lots of enthusiasm. The actor is best known for his roles in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, the latter of which is what prompted Coogler to cast Jonsson. As of right now, it’s unclear if Jonsson will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, or if his debut will be in Black Panther 3.
