Google Wallet launches feature for children to make contactless payments

Parents in the US can now set up a Google Wallet balance for their children and teenagers under 18, allowing them to make contactless payments using compatible Android devices.

Google said the new feature is designed to help families manage children’s money as more everyday payments move away from cash.

Parents can transfer money directly from their own account into their child’s Google Wallet balance. They can also use Google’s Family Link service to monitor spending and transactions, set spending limits and lock or unlock the balance.

Children can use Google Pay to make contactless payments in stores using NFC-enabled Android phones or Wear OS devices.

Google said the feature gives parents control over their children’s spending while allowing young people to gain more independence and learn about managing money, without needing to open a bank account.

Parents will also soon be able to schedule regular automated payments into their child’s balance.

The feature is being launched in the US ahead of the back-to-school season and is available to children and teens under 18.
