Playdate Manufacturer Panic Is Passing Tariff Refunds to Customers

Playdate Manufacturer Panic Is Passing Tariff Refunds to Customers

Panic’s Playdate, a crank-powered handheld gaming system, launched all the way back in 2022, but last year it got hit with the same tariffs as many gaming products. Now that the Supreme Court has ordered the government to refund those fees, Panic is forwarding those refunds to the customers that actually paid them.

The company started sending out emails, spotted on LinkedIn and Reddit, informing customers that they’d be getting a tariff refund sent to their original payment method. The refund itself isn’t much — the highest one I’ve seen is a $25 refund — but when it’s attached to a handheld that costs $250 now and $179 at launch, it’s a pretty decent percentage.

If you bought one of these fun little handhelds when the tariffs were active, you should be automatically getting an email notifying you of the refund. If not, you should be able to reach out to [email protected] to figure out what’s going on.

Ideally, we’d see more companies refunding tariffs now that the refunds have started flowing from the governmen, but there are definitely companies that are holding on to those fees. Even Nintendo has refused to issue refunds to Switch 2 customers, arguing that gamers got exactly what they paid for. Hopefully, the Playdate manufacturers can set a decent example for other companies to follow.

After all, tarrifs aren’t the only thing causing prices to go up lately. Since the beginning of 2026, the RAMpocalypse has had a much bigger impact on prices, and that probably won’t let up any time soon. The way I see it, passing on at least some savings to customers now that prices are solidly out of control is the least manufacturers could do.
