Tetris Responds After Trump Administration Launches Build the Wall Clone

Official Tetris pages have responded after the Trump administration launched a clone video game called ‘Build the Wall.’

The Tetris Company joined the backlash after Donald Trump’s White House published its Arcade.Gov website today. Amongst a line of games on offer, which includes a Flappy Bird clone called ‘Flappy Bill’ and a Snake clone called ‘Rio Run,’ is Build the Wall.

A description for the game follows: “Protect the border from the coming horde.” It’s a message that Tetris wants absolutely nothing to do with.

“At Tetris we believe in the power of connection and bringing people together, not dividing them,” it said. “To our fans everywhere: we love you, we see you, and we’re grateful to have you in our community.”

Tetris continued, confirming that it had nothing to do with the Trump administration’s Build the Wall game. It also added, “We take copyright infringement very seriously.” The Tetris Company does not seem to have taken any sort of legal action against the arcade page yet.

The White House launched its website yesterday. It contains five games, including titles asking players to “border patrol along the Rio Grande” and “fill your kids’ Trump accounts.” It also warned that more games are coming soon.

Arcade.Gov immediately faced backlash from users online. Many have called on companies pulled from the site’s reveal video, including Tetris and Sega, to take action. Although the latter has yet to chime in, Tetris is being quite vocal – and so are its fans. Some of its statement’s top comments note that games such as this are typically about breaking walls, not building them. Others are just happy to see Tetris speaking up.

The Tetris Company’s Kerri Brusca also provided The Verge with a statement on the matter: “For more than 40 years, Tetris has brought people together across generations and cultures through play and joy. The objective of the game has always been to stack with purpose to clear as many lines as possible. We are currently reviewing the matter.”

IGN reported on the site’s original launch earlier today. The Trump administration has stirred controversy with similar moves in the past, including posts referencing the Halo series. Although Microsoft was silent on that matter, The Pokémon Company and Master Chief actor Steve Downes are amongst those who have spoken up.
