A pirate known for cracking games that utilize the DRM software Denuvo is being hit with a lawsuit… but that isn’t stopping them from continuing on.
For years, PC games have attempted to shield themselves from piracy with a DRM software known as Denuvo. The software is meant to be difficult to crack, with the hope that it will protect the game from becoming available for free on piracy sites around the time of launch. It does its job to a degree, as it took about a month and a half for Resident Evil Requiem to be cracked… and it was achieved by a pirate known as voices38.
As spotted by GamesRadar, the pirate is now being sued by Denuvo, so long as the company can actually identify who they are. The company is working to unmask this anonymous pirate and there’s likely hope that even if they aren’t successful, the pressure of an investigation will maybe spook voices38 into disappearing. That’s not the case, though. voices38 took to Reddit to issue a statement, telling fellow pirates that “all is fine” and “everything will continue as normal.”
It’s an interesting story, and one that only feels all the more relevant with the recent GTA 6 leaks, when a leaker obtained access to the build of the highly anticipated game and taunted Rockstar Games with various messages. Once the game was properly revealed, the leaker vanished, and as of a month later, there has been no word as to whether or not they’ve been caught. Whether they’ll return to cause more chaos remains to be seen, but it is pretty evident that online hackers and lawbreakers are getting good at evading detection.
Whether voices38 can continue to crack these games and get away with it is up in the air, but they certainly think they can.
