Tom Cavanagh, who played Reverse-Flash among other roles in The CW’s Arrowverse series The Flash, is actually a fan of the DC Extended Universe’s widely criticized 2023 film starring Ezra Miller.
As reported by ComicBook, Cavanagh offered his opinion on the film at Fan Expo Portland, in a clip shared by MrHistorican on YouTube. He noted a distinction between the film and the TV series he starred in, particularly with the simpler portrayal in the film.
“I liked it. I know [Miller] has had all sorts of off camera issues and stuff going on; they do a remarkable job,” Cavanagh said. “The first half of that movie, in my opinion — and as somebody who’s protective, a little bit, of Grant Gustin as The Flash, and us as The Flash — I thought they were so very winning.
“They took the IQ level down, and I thought that was good. They did it purposefully, and I think that’s going to make The Flash more innocent and different. Good call. Because you don’t want to repeat what a guy did for a decade on television.”
Cavanagh did seem to focus his praise on the first half of the movie, before noting the latter half is “a massive digital thing” which is “not always easy to accomplish.” This is perhaps in reference to the large amount of computer generated images used in The Flash, including to recreate older DC characters.
Overall, though, “if you watch the first half of that movie,” Cavanagh said, “I thought it was extremely well done.”
The Flash generally received a poor critical reception and this was matched at the box office, pulling in just $271 worldwide on a budget of $200 million. Both it and the entire DCEU are now defunct too, as DC Studios is now pushing ahead with its revamped cinematic universe called the DCU.
