Alphabet is launching an experimental version of its Google search engine which produces an AI generated summary.
In a Linkedin post Robby Stein, vice president of product at the company, said that AI Mode is powered by Google’s Gemini 2.0 model to show links in a range of formats and allow users to ask follow up questions.
The service is currently available to subscribers of Google One AI in the US.
Stein added that Google is working on adding richer responses with images and video, trials of which will be added to AI Mode in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Stein said that AI search capabilities will be upgraded with the Gemini 2.0 model to allow better responses on complex topics such as coding and advanced maths.
The AI tool will be added to AI Overviews, which provides summaries before relevant hyperlinks.
“When you search with AI Mode, our custom Gemini 2.0 model uses reasoning and thinking capabilities to generate a plan, conduct multiple related searches and tap into fresh, high-quality info on the web and from Google’s info systems – for example Knowledge Graph, local, finance, sports and shopping data about billions of products,” Stein wrote. “I’ve been using it everyday now and was surprised to see how fast I started relying on it – especially for research, comparisons, and timely questions.”
