Warner Bros. has announced the movie sequel we all expected: Minecraft 2.

It’s due out July 23, 2027 — the same day as Disney’s The Simpsons Movie 2 is due to hit theaters.

Hollywood is set for an explosive blockbuster movie showdown on that date, then, but given A Minecraft Movie made an eye-watering $957,849,195 at the global box office following its April release, The Simpsons has a tough job competing.

Warner Bros. reserved the July date for an “untitled Minecraft sequel,” so the movie may end up called something else. What we know for sure is A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess returns for the sequel, and he’s on writing duty alongside Chris Galletta. The expectation is Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and co will return for the follow-up.

“Plot details remain deep in the mine for now,” teased Warner Bros.

Will A Minecraft Movie 2 spark wild scenes in theaters as the first movie and its viral Chicken Jockey scene did? Will Jack Black end up with yet another chart-topping film song under his belt after Steve’s Lava Chicken terrorised the airways earlier this year?

Probably. While you wait to find out, check out IGN’s A Minecraft Movie review, and find out how the Minecraft movie team had a private server they played on.
