Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie has sprinted past the $500 million worldwide box office milestone.
The Jared Hess-directed and Jack Black-starring video game adaptation walked away from its second chaotic weekend in theaters with more staggering numbers as audiences continue to help it build toward that elusive $1 billion mark. Its domestic total now stands at $278,864,857, while international viewers have it sitting at $273,800,000, bringing its worldwide total to $552,664,857 (via Box Office Mojo).
How A Minecraft Movie would fare in theaters remained a mystery up until the weeks before its release as fans quickly latched onto some lines – specifically those uttered by Black’s Steve – mentioned in some of its trailers. Some quotes polluting social media include “I… am Steve,” “Flint and Steel,” and of course, “Chicken Jockey.” While many critics walked away disappointed (we gave it a 6/10), its undeniable meme status has no doubt helped it find tremendous success at the box office.
A Minecraft Movie’s time in theaters has been more than a ground-breaking success, however, as excited moviegoers quickly transformed into ravenous fans its opening weekend. The internet has since been littered with videos of explosive theaters as crowds react to some of the film’s moments by screaming, hurling popcorn into the air, and in one instance, bringing a real-life chicken along for the ride. The excitement surrounding the adaptation of developer Mojang’s hit video game has gotten so out of control that Black even stepped in to help one theater prepare.
A Minecraft Movie’s updated box office numbers now position it atop other popular video game-to-movie adaptations, including Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Uncharted, and more – and that number will only continue to increase in the weeks ahead. The only video game movie it has yet to pass is Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which finished its run with a worldwide total of more than $1.36 billion (via Box Office Mojo).
While the Hess feature has a long way to go before toppling the Nintendo mascot’s 2023 theatrical outing, we do know it already managed to outpace its opening weekend numbers. Should the momentum continue, it won’t be long before Minecraft takes the crown.
