Aliens 3D Conversion Possible, James Cameron Confirms

It’s no secret that Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron is a fan of 3D, and in a recent interview, he spoke about plans to apply the technology to one of his most beloved movies, Aliens.

“Aliens is a creature of its time,” he said in a Letterboxd interview. “We are thinking about converting Aliens [to 3D], because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We’re probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience. That film seems to be evergreen. People still go back to it a lot. If people remember a movie that I did 38 years ago, I think I’ve already won [an] argument.”

Aliens was originally released in in 1986 and since then has been remastered for each new generation of home movie, with Blu-ray and 4K the most recent.

Back in 2025, Cameron dismissed criticism of his use of 3D and high frame rates for the Avatar movies, citing box office results. “I think $2.3 billion says you might be wrong on that,” he said. “Well, that’s the argument from authority. But the argument from artistic is: I happen to like it, and it’s my movie.”

Cameron most recently worked with singer Billie Eilish co-directing her concert film, Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D). “I was involved through post-production on some of the Justin Bieber docs, so I knew what I was getting into,” he said of the collaboration. “I wanted to direct this one because I really liked Billie’s show. I proposed that we co-direct it, because I quickly learned that she had designed the show. It wasn’t a show designed by somebody else that she happened to be performing in—which is so often the case—it was designed by her as a four-quadrant stage to interact with her fans.”
