Amazon increases same-day prescription delivery service to 4,500 US cities

Amazon Pharmacy will expand same-day prescription delivery to 4,500 cities and towns across the US by the end of 2026, adding nearly 2,000 new communities over the course of this year.

The online retail giant said the expansion will offer fast and reliable medication delivery to more customers nationwide, including those in newly served states such as Idaho and Massachusetts.

Amazon explained that the expansion helps address growing medication access challenges, including pharmacy closures, staffing shortages, and transportation barriers, which the company said leave “millions” of customers with fewer ways to get their medication.

According to Amazon Pharmacy, the business achieved faster delivery speeds in 2025 across all 50 states and Washington DC by using innovative delivery methods tailored to the needs of different communities.

These range from using e-bikes in dense urban areas, offering self-service pick-up from kiosks at clinics, and by horses in remote locations such as Mackinac Island in Michigan.

In areas such as remote Alaska towns and rural communities where deliveries can take between five and 10 days, Amazon said it is able to leverage its logistics network to deliver prescriptions to customers’ homes in two to three days.

Amazon Pharmacy’s expanded same-day and next-day delivery services support customers managing both acute and chronic conditions, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where delivery times were reduced from days to hours.

“Patients shouldn’t have to choose between speed, cost, and convenience when it comes to their medication, regardless of where they live,” said John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy. “By combining our pharmacy expertise with our logistics network, we’re removing critical barriers and helping patients start treatment faster—setting a new standard for accessible, digital-forward pharmacy care.”

In January this year Amazon launched a new prescription medication subscription for the US market.

The $5 per month RxPass will be available to new and existing US Prime subscribers.

It will provide users with access to more than 50 medications for over 80 conditions Amazon described as ‘common’ such as high blood pressure, anxiety, or acid reflux.

The company said at the time that the programme will save the average Prime member around $100 per year
