Amazon has announced Meredith Averill as the new showrunner for Fourth Wing, the highly anticipated TV adapation of the popular fantasy romance book by the same name, which is part of The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros.
Averill has credits as the showrunner for Locke and Key, executive producer for The Haunting of Hill House, and executive producer for Wednesday, Season 2.
In July 2025, it was announced that previous showrunner for the series, Moira Walley-Beckett, was out after being attached since 2024. The TV series has been in development since October 2023, and is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society – both of which whom have acquired the rights to all books in the series.
The Fourth Wing adaptation will follow Violet Sorrengail as she attends Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider. The college holds deadly competitions and the trainings can be fatal for students, all while Violet tries to avoid running into the most powerful student at Basgiath who seems to be out to kill her – Xaden Riorson.
The Emyprean series has sold over 12 million books worldwide, and currently has three books published in the series. The first one being Fourth Wing, released in May 2023, the sequel Iron Flame, released in November 2023, and most recently Onyx Storm, released in January 2025. Yarros has shared there will be two more books written for the series, but she has not begun writing book four yet, as she has been focusing on one of her other series’ first.
Fourth Wing spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list and spent 94 weeks in total on the list, while selling over 2.7 milion copies in its first week of release.
Yarros announced in March 2025 that graphic-novel adaptations are in the works for The Empyrean series, spanning a total of six books, covering Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm. Yarros said she will be adapating the books herself, along with comic creators.
