Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, told leaders at the G7 that they must “resist the temptation to splinter” over the rollout of advanced AI models, the Financial Times has reported.
Citing people familiar with the discussions, the paper reported that Amodei made the comments on Wednesday and drew support from rival chief executive Sam Altman of OpenAI.
Amodei told the assembled leaders that he sympathised with the efforts of countries to prevent AI from falling into the wrong hands, but that democratic nations should come together. Altman reportedly emphasised that cyber defence tools should be provided to all the countries in the room.
The news follows the US’s government order last week which required Anthropic to suspend access to its flagship AI model for foreign nationals. In response, the company decided to withdraw access to all users to ensure compliance. The company has characterised the action as a misunderstanding.
French president Emmanuel Macron reportedly said that the dispute had “clarified the stakes” for the US and its allies, warning that if the US “from one day to the next can turn off the switch”, it would harm the US companies that are currently leading the AI arms race.
He added that discussions with other G7 leaders, including US president Donald Trump, had been fruitful, but not yet conclusive on how to deal with frontier AI models.
Indian president Narendra Modi also expressed concern over the Trump administration’s decision, the FT reported, citing people familiar with the discussion, adding that democratic nations must have access to AI models to protect critical infrastructure.
Altman and Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis focused on cooperation, suggesting a technical standards body and a US-led evaluation forum, according to the FT.
