BAE Systems launches UK tech incubator scheme

BAE Systems has announced the launch of a new UK technology incubator programme designed to enable dual-use technologies that thrive beyond the defence sector and reach their full commercial potential.

Launchpad aims to move defence technologies beyond the prototype development stage by spinning them out into independent startup businesses.

The defence and aerospace technology company said the scheme aligns with key priorities outlined in the UK’s Defence Industrial Strategy, which calls for “constant innovation at wartime pace” and emphasises the need for more successful spinouts from UK-developed technologies.

The programme is designed to leverage BAE Systems’ position as a technology giant to support national priorities, including rapid technology incubation, sovereign capability and economic growth.

BAE Systems said the scheme will provide start-ups with access to customers across a broader range of sectors, such as energy and advanced manufacturing.

The company added that Launchpad will expand UK innovation and strengthen the country’s industrial base.

Julian Cracknell chief technology and information officer at BAE Systems said the scheme will help more people use the innovative technology being developed by some of the “smartest brains” in the UK.

“BAE Systems has long been a leader in UK research and development and Launchpad represents an exciting evolution in how innovation is taken forwards,” he added. “It allows us to bring to market agile start-ups that are increasingly vital to sectors beyond defence, including energy and advanced manufacturing.”

Launchpad has already established its first company in the scheme, Rho-C, which is currently in the process of closing its first venture capital funding round.

Rho-C will use innovative technology originally developed for use in submarines, which enables the transmission of power and data through solid materials.

BAE Systems said the technology eliminates the need to drill holes for wires and has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and safety of operations in the oil and gas industry.

Future ventures supported by Launchpad could also include partnerships with academics and other technology specialists, including opportunities using quantum clocks for radar and hyperspectral sensing.
