A modder named Hippo0o has released “Trials of Tav” on Nexus Mods, a Baldur’s Gate 3 roguelike mode that turns the game into an entirely combat-focused experience. This provides a handy way for players to focus solely on combat as they fight waves of enemies that become progressively more difficult. The mod includes over 250 enemies and 38 maps from the base game and can be played in multiplayer mode. Each enemy wave is randomly generated based on the player’s RogueScore, which takes into account how powerful the player character is to devise an appropriate challenge.

To play “Trials of Tav,” players can either start a new game after installing the mod or pick up a save from their in-progress campaign. However, an ongoing campaign will be ruined if it is overridden, so it’s advised to have a backup if players intend to use an existing character. While this is optional, Hippo0o recommends players use the mod while in the game’s Honour Mode, which offers true roguelike permadeath. Players who want tougher fights can also try out Challenge Mode, which dramatically increases the difficulty of the encounters.

Fans continue coming up with mods that change the game in major ways, and even wilder mods will likely make their way online in the future. Earlier this month, Larian Studios announced that Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 7 will add official modding support. With the modding kit, it will be easier for gamers to tweak BG3, even creating entirely new classes, weapons, or spells. At the moment, testing of the toolkit is in Closed Alpha, and the official release is expected this September.
