Barbie Director’s Narnia Reboot Adds Carey Mulligan to Its Cast

The upcoming Narnia reboot from Barbie movie writer and director Greta Gerwig has added Carey Mulligan to its growing cast.

That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, which has learned of Mulligan’s involvement in the project alongside former James Bond star Daniel Draig, Sex Education’s Emma Mackey and Hollywood legend Meryl Streep.

Gerwig will once again serve as both writer and director for her new take on C.S. Lewis’ classic fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia.

The upcoming film will be an adaptation of the series’ prequel novel, The Magician’s Nephew, which is set before the events of the original and most famous Narnia story, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Mulligan, who has notched up numerous awards and nominations for Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, is reportedly set to star as Mabel Kirke, mother of the book’s child hero Digory.

Daniel Craig is set to play the film’s titular magician, and Digory’s uncle. Mackey will be playing a younger version of Narnia’s evil White Witch, while Streep will be taking on the voice role of Aslan, the series’ god-like talking lion.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Narnia has appeared on the big screen. A trilogy of movies that launched between 2005 and 2010 adapted the first three Narnia books as written by C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Those films featured Doctor Strange star Tilda Swinton as the White Witch, and Star Wars’ Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan.

Gerwig’s new take on Narnia will be her first major project since 2023’s Barbie movie proved to be an unexpected box office hit. The film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling earned eight Academy Award nominations, and won for Best Original Song.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is currently set for release at some point in 2026.
