Bob Odenkirk Says More Better Call Saul Would Have to be Set in Prison: ‘He’s Not Getting Out’

Warning! Spoilers for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul follow.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul alum Bob Odenkirk says he’s open to returning as the infamous Jimmy McGill a.k.a. Saul Goodman, but a lot of pieces would need to fall into place first.

Odenkirk spoke about what it would take for him to step back into Saul Goodman’s colorful suits during a recent interview with Today. Although he admits he’d be open to reprising his role for yet another spinoff from creator Vince Gilligan’s legendary crime drama television series, the actor warns fans that the events of Better Call Saul’s finale will go unchanged.

“He’s not getting out (of prison),” he said. “If there’s another Saul show, it takes place inside prison.”

After four seasons of Breaking Bad and six of Better Call Saul, Odenkirk’s sleezy lawyer character finally faced the consequences for his crimes against his friends, family, and clients in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Although the role will always remain an important part of his career, the star admits that Saul, as well as Nobody and Nobody 2’s Hutch Mansell, can be difficult characters to play.

“Both Hutch Mansell in Nobody and Saul Goodman in Better Call Saul have a lot of impacted frustration inside them,” Odenkirk told THR. “They’re guys who, for different reasons, have pretty big chips on their shoulders, and that’s hard to play after a while. You can’t just carry that guy around all the time.”

He clarifies that he would be open to returning as Hutch for “third or fourth” entries in the Nobody series – and Saul isn’t off the table either. However, Odenkirk says whether Breaking Bad fans get more from Better Call Saul is up to Better Call Saul’s creators, and it might be a bit of a long shot.

So if they were to think of something in that world, of course I would do it.

“Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould created that show,” he adds. “There are some of the best writers who ever worked in TV. So if they were to think of something in that world, of course I would do it.”

He continued, pouring cold water on the chances of more from the world of Breaking Bad: “But I don’t think so. I think they’ve all moved on to some more amazing projects that you’ll soon see.”

One of the projects Odenkirk is referring to is Gilligan’s new Apple TV+ series, Pluribus. It stars Better Call Saul alum Rhea Seehorn and is set to premiere November 7, 2025. Gould, who served as co-creator and showrunner for the Saul Goodman show, is currently attached to a new FX series titled Disinherited.
