Bordeaux Airport trials AI tool to improve passenger flows

Bordeaux Airport will pilot an AI tool to improve the flow of passengers and its deployment of resources.

The tool uses a digital twin of the airport to provide a continuous, three-dimensional view of passenger movements in targeted areas such as security checkpoints.

Installed in partnership with technology firm Outsight, the tool will model movements within Hall A of the terminal in real time.

The flows are digitised in an anonymous manner within a shared spatial repository system to allow the airport to analyse queue formation, density changes, and the use of different areas.

The pilot phase will allow airport teams to have a view of passenger flows and adjust resources according to demand.

Additionally, the airport said the tool will improve coordination between different airlines and government services to welcome passengers.

Each year some six million passengers use Bordeaux Airport to travel around 92 destinations.

In an environment where infrastructure is inherently constrained, the airport said that optimising existing spaces, managing queues and anticipating congestion points are essential to maintain the smooth running of the building.

Talel Jaouad, head of airport process department at Bordeaux Airport, said the pilot would allow the airport to improve its understanding and control of passenger flow.

“The ultimate goal, of course, is passenger satisfaction,” he added. “For our staff, as well as our partners operating in the terminals – airlines, service providers, and retailers – this pilot represents an undeniable advantage for fine-tuning their actions in real time and within a framework of continuous improvements.”
