Spider-Man: Brand New Day is getting an IMAX release in the United States after all, and it’s coming very soon.
Starting this Thursday, fans will be able to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX. It’s expected to share the giant screens with The Odyssey, as the film’s having huge legs and will continue to show in IMAX 70MM through mid-September. So, there will still likely be limited screenings of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX, given The Odyssey is a three-hour film and there’s a limit to how many showings IMAX can have each day. Neverthelesss, you’ll certainly have the opportunity to check it out.

Last year, Marvel fans were disappointed to learn that Spider-Man: Brand New Day wouldn’t be debuting on IMAX screens upon its initial release. It’s the most popular and beloved premium format, but part of the reason it has gotten to that point is thanks to Christopher Nolan. As a result of his continued efforts to champion the format, his films often get a somewhat unprecedented level of exclusivity and box any other film out from the screens for three weeks.
Sony was unwilling to wait a week, for whatever reason, so Spider-Man’s IMAX United States release had to be delayed. Still, no one was sure if it would release here in IMAX. It seems like Sony kept it a secret, likely to encourage fans to see the movie upon release and then a second time in the premium format. This plan almost definitely worked as Spider-Man: Brand New Day had an gobsmacking opening weekend. Spider-Man: Brand New Day had the second biggest global opening weekend in history behind Avengers: Endgame.
The film also officially surpassed Endgame’s domestic opening weekend. Spidey grossed a whopping $360 million domestically, blowing past Endgame’s $357 million. Early estimates suggested Spider-Man would fall just below Endgame and take second place, but the webhead managed to surpass early expectations.
Brand New Day did release in IMAX last week in China, Japan, and South Korea, as The Odyssey hasn’t released in those countries yet. Director Destin Daniel Cretton even told Hollywood+ that the movie was “made for the IMAX experience” and had sequences shot specifically for the format.
“I love the IMAX experience and I think this movie in particular was made for the IMAX experience,” said Cretton ahead of the film’s release. “The IMAX frame, the IMAX size, the IMAX sound will give you an experience unlike anything else. You will feel like you are standing on the edge of a skyscraper, you will feel the wind blowing through your hair, you will feel the sound of the web vibrating as you’re swinging at a couple hundred miles per hour through New York. See it in IMAX. See it on the biggest IMAX screen you can find.”
