Buffy the Vampire Slayer Star Nicholas Brendon Dies, Aged 54

The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have paid tribute to Nicholas Brendon, the actor who played Xander on the cult classic TV series, who has died at the age of 54.

Brendon’s death was announced by his family late on Friday, who described him as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.” Brendon “passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the statement continued, following several years of health issues — including a heart attack in 2023 and other recent spinal surgeries.

While Brendon had various other acting roles, he remains best known for portraying Alexander “Xander” Harris in almost every episode of Buffy. A loyal sidekick to Buffy herself and core member of the Scooby gang throughout all seven seasons of the show, Xander was notable for being one of the few characters without special abilities or powers.

Throughout the series, this lack of special powers was shown to be Xander’s strength, as the source of his heroism and ability to be the heart of the show came from him simply being human. Xander was also portrayed as a fellow geek for Buffy’s legion of committed fans — and one who helped make being a geek cool. Speaking in 2017 for the show’s 20th anniversary, Brendon memorably recalled being greeted by numerous fans at conventions over the years who would tell him: “‘Man, you got me laid a lot in high school. You made it cool to be a nerd and awkward and funny.'”

“My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers,” fellow Buffy star Alyson Hannigan wrote on Instagram, reflecting on her many years working alongside him while playing witch Willow Rosenberg. “I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”

“I will miss the version of the man I once knew – someone who was so warm and loving,” wrote Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase during Buffy’s first three seasons, in her own tribute via Facebook. “He was cuddly, funny, silly, self-deprecating, and supremely talented. I loved every scene we had together back in the day. He always kept me on my toes, never delivering a line the same way twice, forcing me to become a better actor by listening.”

In the years following his time on Buffy, Brendon faced struggles with his mental health and substance abuse, and agreed to a plea deal in 2017 after a charge of felony corporal injury to a spouse. His family’s statement acknowledged the actor’s “struggles in the past,” but noted that Brendon was “optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” and on a treatment plan for his medical issues.

“There are people you work with and then there are people you share time with. Nick was the latter,” wrote fellow Buffy star David Boreanaz via Instagram. “Some moments stay small on paper, a laugh between takes, a look that says we got this, the quiet understanding of showing up and doing the work together. But those are the things that last.”

“‘They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me,'” concluded Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar via Facebook, quoting Xander’s iconic line. “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
