Commonwealth Bank hires first chief AI scientist

Commonwealth Bank of Australia appointed Professor Mary-Anne Williams as its first chief AI scientist on Monday 18 May 2026 following a global search aimed at strengthening its artificial intelligence research capability and expanding the responsible deployment of AI across the lender.

Commonwealth Bank said the creation of the role reflects its ambition to advance frontier AI research and scale practical applications across financial services. Ranil Boteju, chief AI officer at the bank, said the appointment would support both innovation and governance. “Mary-Anne is one of Australia’s most respected AI leaders and brings a rare combination of academic leadership, commercial insight, and deep technical expertise that will help accelerate our AI strategy,” he said.

“She will help us explore the boundaries of what is possible with AI while taking a leadership role in the continued application of responsible AI in ways that make a real difference for our customers.”

Professor Williams joins from the University of New South Wales, where she holds senior research and leadership roles in artificial intelligence and innovation. Reuters reported that she has also held fellowships at Stanford University and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, reflecting her standing in global AI research networks.

She said the move comes at a pivotal moment for the sector as banks move beyond experimentation towards large-scale deployment of AI systems. “CommBank has built one of the most advanced AI capabilities of any bank in the world, and I’m excited to be joining at such a pivotal moment,” she told Reuters. “My focus will be on advancing our understanding of the societal implications of AI and supporting continued responsible AI innovation across CommBank.”

In her new position, Professor Williams will lead the bank’s team of distinguished AI scientists working across machine learning, generative AI, AI security and responsible AI development. The role also includes shaping the group’s research agenda and supporting recruitment of specialist AI talent as competition for expertise intensifies across global financial services.

Commonwealth Bank’s AI strategy has been underpinned by partnerships with major technology firms including AWS, Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI, Reuters reported. The lender also operates technology hubs in San Francisco and Seattle, designed to support collaboration with global research and engineering teams. It was ranked fourth globally and first in Asia Pacific in the 2025 Evident AI Index, which assesses AI maturity across the banking sector, particularly in talent development and responsible AI practices.
