DC Studios and HBO Max is developing a Superman spin-off series titled DC Crime, which will star Skyler Gisondo as The Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen. American Vandal’s Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are onboard as the series’ writers, executive producers, and showrunners.

Variety reports that DC Crime “would be presented as a true crime docuseries that would be hosted by Jimmy Olsen … The first season would focus on Gorilla Grodd, a DC villain best known for his battles with The Flash.”

DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran will executive produce “with DC Studios’ Galen Vaisman overseeing production. Warner Bros. Television is the studio,” per Variety.

In his Superman review, IGN’s Tom Jorgensen praised the film’s incarnation of Jimmy Olsen, writing that “Gisondo fulfills the traditional comic-relief duties of Superman’s pal, while also factoring into the plot in an unexpected and satisfying way as he gets in over his head with one of his sources.”

Created by writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino, Gorilla Grodd debuted in The Flash #106 back in May 1959. He is a super-intelligent ape who possesses super strength and speed as well as the powers of telepathy and telekinesis. Gorilla Grodd ranked 35th on IGN’s Top 100 Comic Book Villains of all time.

Gorilla Grodd has been adapted for the small screen before, appearing in the animated series Super Friends, Justice League, Justice League: Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Harley Quinn. He also had a non-speaking cameo in an episode of the DCU’s Creature Commandos.

Gorilla Grodd was also in the animated movie Batman Ninja and was a playable character in the Injustice 2 video game. Grodd made his live-action debut in the Arrowverse’s The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
