Endgame Record to Claim Biggest Opening Day

Endgame Record to Claim Biggest Opening Day

Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken yet another record after webbing up a whopping $168 million at the domestic box office on its opening day.

That’s according to Variety, which reported that the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie reached the figure on its July 31 premiere date. It’s a number that gives it an $11 million lead over Avengers: Endgame’s $157 million opening, securing its place as the film with the biggest opening day for a domestic release of all time.

Sony reportedly expects its Tom Holland-starring, Destin Daniel Cretton-directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day to accumulate $325 million by the weekend’s end. Other estimates are said to be anticipating earnings to reach as high as $358 million. Should the latter pan out, it would also see the film beat Endgame’s $357 million to nab the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time.

Seeing Spidey reach these heights is incredible but not out of character. Early expectations had the film poised for a massive debut. Preview audiences then helped the Marvel movie bring in $72 million, giving it not only a solid head start on the weekend but an additional broken record over Endgame’s $60 million preview day.

Although we’re only halfway through Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s first weekend in theaters and global totals have yet to be tallied, it feels all but confirmed that it will manage to walk away with the biggest opening weekend of the year, if not of all time.

That’s not to say Marvel hasn’t had stiff competition in the lead-up to the release of its new summer blockbuster. Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also had a strong opening in April and eventually went on to cross the $1 billion mark in June.

King of Pop biopic Michael pulled in record numbers upon its late April premiere and passed $1 billion last month, and Toy Story 5 piled on a global opening of $312 million in June before reaching $1 billion last weekend. Finally, there’s The Odyssey, which exceeded expectations with its $264 million global opening. Although the Christopher Nolan movie hasn’t reached the big B quite yet, it seems on track to sail past it in the near future. It looks like Spidey, meanwhile, will beat them all.

What Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s finish will look like is anyone’s guess, but it won’t be long before we start talking about it passing that $1 billion milestone, too. While we wait for updates from the minds at Marvel, you can read IGN’s 7/10 review. You can also read about a leak that hit the film yesterday, and how it teases a different take on one of the most iconic teams in comic book history.
