Harry Potter Series Won’t Be Annual, But HBO Don’t Want ‘Huge Gap’ Between Seasons

Harry Potter Series Won’t Be Annual, But HBO Don’t Want ‘Huge Gap’ Between Seasons

HBO’s boss wants its Harry Potter TV series to “not have a huge gap” between seasons — but has admitted the show won’t be annual, and its second year of production is still at the script stage.

Speaking to The Times, HBO boss Casey Bloys was questioned further over the streamer’s release plans for the series, after he previously admitted that the show would likely launch in a pattern similar to House of the Dragon and The Last of Us due to its complex, effects-heavy nature.

“You have to balance it,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter last week. “For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, huge world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis. But from a production point of view, it’s just not possible.”

This comment immediately rang alarm bells for fans who had previously thought the show would air annually, following the start of production on its first season last year. For comparison, House of the Dragon and The Last of Us have aired new seasons on HBO every two years, a cadence that would see the seven expected seasons of Harry Potter stretch to launching over 14 years — potentially until 20241.

“Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing,” Bloys has now said, without providing a firmer estimate for how big that gap might be.

“It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive,” he concluded. “But… they’re writing the season two now.”

This comment will likely do little to assuage the fears of some fans who now believe they will be left waiting more than a decade for the series to fully release — by which point, Dumbledore actor John Lithgow will be in his mid-nineties.

Some fans had believed that, while post-production work would inevitably take up time following filming, there was more of a plan in place to shoot seasons as quickly as possible — preferably, every year — so the young actors’ ages continued to match their on-screen counterparts. But if the show’s second season is still being written, rather than being readied for shooting, its actual production now sounds further away.

Last week gave us our first trailer for the Harry Potter series, showing the young actor Dominic McLaughlin is the series’ title role alongside John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and many, many more.

“There is nothing special about Harry Potter – at least that’s what his Aunt Petunia always says,” an official description for the Harry Potter show says. “On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past.”

As for how long it will take to see Harry finally grow up and defeat that villain, all we know for certain is that the series will debut this Christmas with an eight-episode first season that will continue on into early 2027. Filming last summer spotted by fans included work on fresh scenes not from the prior movies or books. A recent major set leak gave fans a detailed look at the new Diagon Alley, while HBO has admitted the company is spending big on the show, and making a level of financial investment it normally wouldn’t make.
