After 3 seasons, coming-of-age adaptation Heartstopper will end with a movie, Heartstopper Forever, and Netflix just revealed it will arrive on July 17. The movie will follow Nick and Charlie as they deal with the challenges of their teenage romance turning into a long-distance relationship.
“I think this movie will explore what makes love survive, or what elevates it, or deepens it. At 18 and 17, Nick and Charlie are hurtling towards their adult lives,” author Alice Oseman told Tudum. “Many teenage relationships don’t survive that pivotal moment of change. Are Nick and Charlie a forever love? If they are, why? I want the movie to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple — from teens to adults, from teen romance to forever love, from past to future. And in doing so, get to the heart of what teenage love can become as adolescence becomes a memory, and what teenage love can mean for people in the overall picture of their lives.”
The movie will also add two new notable cast members, Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Good Omens) and Derek Jacobi (Gladiator 2, The Crown). Maxwell Martin replaces Olivia Coleman in the role of Nick’s mom.
“Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character,” explained Oseman. “We are deeply grateful for Olivia’s beautiful performance as Sarah in Seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, through such iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan.”
So far the Heartstopper seasons have been a hit with viewers, critics, and the LGBTQ+ community.
