Injustice 3 Rumors Ramp Up Again

It’s been nearly three years since Mortal Kombat 1 came out, but developer NetherRealm has yet to announce its next game. However, for some time now fans have speculated that Injustice 3 — the next game in its DC fighting game franchise — is in the works at NetherRealm, and recent reports have backed that up.

MP1st reported that Injustice 3 is in active development at NetherRealm, having spotted an explicit mention of the game on the resume of an undisclosed artist currently working at Warner Bros. Games.

Evidence of the existence of Injustice 3 shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given voice actors for Injustice characters Superman and Aquaman have teased their involvement in a sequel.

In September 2024, NetherRealm development chief Ed Boon, who is currently on the road promoting the imminent release of Mortal Kombat 2 in theaters, revealed that the studio had decided its next game back in 2021. At the time, Boon said NetherRealm was “still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.” But just eight months later, Warner Bros. Games confirmed no new DLC characters or story chapters would be released for the game — a decision that sparked significant backlash within the community.

Since then, we’ve heard basically nothing from NetherRealm about what’s next. You’d like to think an announcement of some nature won’t be too far off though, if the past is anything to go by. The first game in the series, Injustice: Gods Among Us, launched in 2013, with its sequel, Injustice 2, coming out in 2017. NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and for a time it seemed like the studio would alternate between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games, but it went on to release another Mortal Kombat, the soft reboot that is Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023 instead. We’re due a new Injustice, then, if not this year, then perhaps next year.
