James Gunn Confirms the Viola Davis Waller Series Is, In Fact, Still in Development

James Gunn wants you to know: the rumors aren’t true. The DC Studios head has officially confirmed that the upcoming Waller television series is, in fact, still in development.

The longtime producer took to Threads recently to confirm the show’s status in response to a fan who asked if the rumors about Waller being reworked into a Checkmate show were untrue. He confirmed that they were untrue with a one-word “yes” response to the fan.

Another fan then swooped in to confirm in no uncertain terms, “So Waller is still in development?” and Gunn gave another one-word “yes” answer.

It’s good to hear a hard confirmation from the DCU boss, considering he recently acknowledged that the series was having some difficulties behind the scenes amid the development process. “Waller has had a couple of, you know, setbacks, frankly,” Gunn explained at a DC Studios press event alongside co-studio head Peter Safran back in February.

Otherwise, details have been pretty sparse about the series thus far. The show was first announced when the DCU slate was revealed back in January 2023 and was positioned as a spinoff of Peacemaker that would explore the aftermath of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller’s daughter, Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, exposing the existence of Task Force X at the end of the first season. However, the 2023 strikes did put a wrench in that mix, forcing the team to rewrite to work with the new DCU timeline, which delayed production significantly, as is now obvious.

The series was developed by Watchman writer Christal Henry and Doom Patrol creator Henry Carver — but as of right now, there isn’t much more out there about it, at least for public consumption. That said, this confirmation from Gunn is a huge step forward for the series, which we will hopefully see next year. Fingers crossed, anyway.
