James Gunn has shot down rumors that Milly Alcock was fired as Supergirl and confirmed that he’ll show Peter Safran an early cut of Man of Tomorrow later today.
The DC Studios co-chairman took to Threads on October 16 to dispel rumors surrounding his comic book movie projects. Although he’s found putting a lid on the endless flow of internet rumors to be a little tiring, there were a few he wanted to take aim at when replying to a fan on Twitter/X.
First and foremost was the rumor that director Matt Reeves had completely departed The Batman Part 2 as director. Just about everyone now confirmed to be involved in the Elseworlds sequel had already clarified that Reeves would remain involved, so his denial is no surprise here. Another more recent rumor had some fans saying the star of Supergirl was let go, but that one’s not true, either.

DC movie watchers feared the worst for Alcock’s character after noticing the star had wiped mentions of Kara Zor-El from her Instagram timeline. Although that’s not completely true – some photos and Reels related to Supergirl are still very much publicly visible – her standalone film’s trouble in theaters had some believing she would be leaving the DCU behind.
Gunn confirmed that’s not the case, and it’s easy to see why. Alcock first appeared as the character in 2025’s Superman and reprised her role in Supergirl when it came out in June. She’s been firmly established in the new comic book movie universe, but she’s also poised for a triumphant return in Man of Tomorrow.
Earlier this summer, Gunn teased that Alcock was set to return as Kara when the Superman sequel premieres July 2027. He even went as far as to say that her dynamic with David Corenswet’s Clark Kent would come into play in the new movie while filming was underway recently.
Speaking of Man of Tomorrow, the third rumor Gunn shot down had to do with whispers that the DCU film had received poor reviews after an early test screening allegedly featured a dark ending and the death of a beloved hero. It’s another bit of gossip that the director and comic book movie executive confirmed “couldn’t be more false,” but it also came with an update.
It just so happens that Gunn had planned to show Safran a director’s cut for Man of Tomorrow later today. He said his fellow DC Studios co-chairman will “obviously” be the first person to see any version of the film, adding, “and that’s a month early!”
Gunn’s words come at a time that has DC fans more anxious than ever. Superman started the live-action corner of the DCU off with a sonic boom when it swooped into theaters last year, but that momentum came to a halt with Supergirl. Although Lanterns helped reignite the fan base with strong casting choices and a grounded story, there’s been some hesitancy amongst those online who fear films like Clayface and Man of Tomorrow won’t deliver.
Gunn, at least, sounds more confident than ever. As far as rumors go, while fans await official updates, there’s only so much he’s willing to entertain.
“Oh brother,” his post said. “You guys just have to stop listening to BS, and I’m mostly done shooting down rumors, as there are so many and I’m not on here much.”
If you weren’t aware, the former Marvel filmmaker has put rumors on blast before. When fans started to suspect Supernatural star Jenson Ackles would be playing the DCU’s Batman, for example, Gunn quickly stepped in to put an end to things.
