Actor Jason Momoa has confirmed a big spoiler for Dune 3, which is set to start filming later in 2025.
Warning! Spoilers for Dune 3 / Dune: Messiah follow.
Speaking to TODAY’s Craig Melvin to promote A Minecraft Movie, Momoa confirmed he is set to appear in the third installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie series.
In 2021’s Dune, Momoa played Duncan Idaho, swordmaster and mentor to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. His character dies following the Harkonnen invasion of Arrakis, and does not appear in Dune: Part Two.
However, in the Dune novels by Frank Herbert, specifically 1969’s Dune Messiah, Duncan Idaho returns in clone form (a ghola) as a gift to Paul, now the Emperor. Dune Messiah is the basis of Villeneuve’s Dune 3, so it makes sense that Momoa would return to play the character.
“Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean?” Momoa said in the interview. “If you didn’t read the books it’s not my fault, right?”
“I’m going to be coming back,” he added. “I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby.”
Momoa then turned to, presumably, his publicist, before realization set in. “He’s got me in trouble!” he said. “It was in the books, man! If you didn’t read it, it’s not my fault!”
As Melvin pointed out, it’s unlikely Momoa will be booted out of Dune 3, despite the spoiler. “I don’t think so,” Momoa said at the end of the chat.
Dune 3 is set to take place 12 years after the events of Dune 2, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy all returning. It’s set to launch at some point in 2026. For more, check out IGN’s feature, Dune: Part 3 – What to Expect From the Next Sequel Movie.
