Jujutsu Kaisen follows Itadori Yuji, a high schooler who is thrust into the world of powerful sorcerers and cursed energy after consuming the finger of Ryomen Sukuna – known as the King of Curses. Throughout his journey and training at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Itadori encounters many other sorcerers. One such character is Muta Kokichi. Muta is a second-year sorcerer at Kyoto Jujutsu High, who was originally introduced during the Goodwill Event between both schools.
During a fight with Panda, it is shown that Kokichi fights using a cursed corpse called Ultimate Mechamaru. During the Shibuya Arc, he also puts up an intense fight with the extremely powerful Diaster Curse – Mahito. This power is due to his Heavenly Restriction. But, what is a Heavenly Restriction and how does it affect Kokichi’s cursed techniques?
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Promises the Anime’s Darkest Arc Yet
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Culling Game Arc promises a blood-soaked narrative that might put the Shibuya Incident to shame.
What is a Heavenly Restriction?
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, cursed energy serves as the power source for all sorcerers and cursed spirits, used in various ways, such as crafting cursed tools and fueling cursed techniques. Cursed energy levels vary among individuals, with certain conditions affecting sorcerers from birth. One of these conditions is known as a Heavenly Restriction. A Heavenly Restriction is a limitation imposed on a sorcerer at the time of their birth.
During this period, a contract is essentially formed, impacting the cursed energy within the sorcerer’s body in exchange for something else. The most widely recognized type of Heavenly Restriction involves a significant reduction or even elimination of the inherent cursed energy within a sorcerer. Currently, there are three sorcerers known to be born with Heavenly Restrictions: Zenin Toji, Zenin Maki, and Kokichi.
Kokichi’s Heavenly Restriction Grants Him Great Power, but at a Huge Cost
While Maki is born with very little cursed energy and Toji is born with none in exchange for incredible physical prowess, Kokichi’s Heavenly Restriction has a devastating impact on his body. During the Goodwill Event and his fight with Panda, it is revealed that Kokichi’s body is extremely fragile and covered almost entirely in bandages, as he cannot withstand sunshine or moonlight without sunburn. His right forearm is missing and his legs are extremely weak, so much so that he can not walk. He is always in pain, which he describes as feeling as if he is being consistently stabbed. To alleviate this pain, he sits in a bathtub attached to tubes, filled with water. Despite this, Kokichi is a very powerful sorcerer, who battled Mahito during the Shibuya Arc.
Although he is overpowered by Mahito and is murdered in the process, Kokichi puts up a powerful fight. Kokichi’s immense cursed energy and power are due to a Heavenly Restriction placed on him at birth. In exchange for his poor physical state, Kokichi possessed vast amounts of cursed energy that could spread over a far range. This allows him the ability to control innumerable Mechamaru puppets. One includes Ultimate Mechamaru – Mode: Absolute. After having his body healed by Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration, Kokichi was finally healthy enough to pilot the Ultimate Mechamaru by himself. Mode: Absolute is fueled by Kokichi’s entire life’s worth of cursed energy, which is seventeen years, five months, and six days. And although he is killed, Kokichi’s cursed energy is still available, even after his death. During the Shibuya Incident, Kokichi had small communication puppets to help his fellow sorcerers, including Itadori Yuji and Miwa Kasumi. These puppets, called Mini-Mechamaru, are powered by the reminiscence of Kokichi’s cursed energy.
In conclusion, Kokichi’s character in Jujutsu Kaisen exemplifies the relationship between sorcerers, cursed energy, and Heavenly Restrictions. Despite his physically fragile state and the severe limitations imposed by his Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi showcases exceptional mastery over cursed energy, shown through his ability to control powerful cursed corpses like Ultimate Mechamaru and the creation of Mini-Mechamaru puppets. Kokichi’s fight against Mahito during the Shibuya Arc, fueled by his entire life’s worth of cursed energy, is an example of the extraordinary power that can arise from such limitations.
