Kevin Bacon’s Cult Classic Monster Movie Tremors Could Be Set for an Unlikely Sequel After Original Team Obtains Rights

Cult classic 1990 monster movie Tremors could be set for an unlikely sequel after the team behind the movie reclaimed the rights.

In a blog post, the founders of Stampede Entertainment said they had obtained the rights from Universal and now plan to expand the franchise.

“We are discussing a return-to-Perfection sequel,” Stampede said in a nod to the desert town in which Tremors is set, “and one or two more outlandish ideas featuring graboids in new settings.”

The 25 Best Monster Movies of All Time

Tremors, directed by Ron Underwood and starring Kevin Bacon, revolves around giant monsters who emerge from the ground. The 1990 original bombed at the box office but has become a cult classic. Five direct-to-video sequels and even a prequel followed, with a 2003 TV show squeezed in for good measure. Tremors: Shrieker Island, which came out in 2020, was the last Tremors film to release.

The big question of course is whether Kevin Bacon will return to Tremors. He’s said he’d be up for a sequel, and Stampede clearly knows what fans want, saying: “We are considering ideas that feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Val, but no promises!”

“Whatever we decide to pitch to Hollywood, it will not be a remake [of] the first movie with a new cast,” Stampede clarified. “Nor will it be a version of our original script for Tremors 5.”
