Lidl to trial in-app scanning tool

Lidl has announced plans to trial a self-scanning feature which will be integrated into its Lidl Plus app.

The scanning feature will allow customers to scan products as they shop, track their spending and savings in real time as well as complete their purchases at a self-checkout terminal.

The supermarket said that the move will transform the in-store experience and is designed to offer customers a faster, more flexible way to shop.

From September, the feature will be tested by a select number of customers across four stores.
Should the trial be successful, Lidl said it will roll out the service more widely next year.

Lidl added that feature is part of its long-term investment into technology and innovation, with this latest investment in its digital infrastructure underlining its commitment to improving the customer journey with scalable technology.

“This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution – integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop,” said Ryan McDonnell, chief executive at Lidl GB. “We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences.

“Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”

In April, Lidl trialled a “Click, Reserve & Collect” service in the Lidl Plus app which allows its customers to reserve products which are on sale for limited periods of time.

Through the service customers can reserve a “Middle of Lidl” product up to two weeks in advance of it arriving in store.
