The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate just found its writers in John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the writers and directors behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Announced today, Daley and Goldenstein will write the screenplay for the film based on Hasbro’s board game. As we’ve learned previously, the film will be produced by Margot Robbie as a part of her production company, LuckyChap.
Alongside Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldenstein also recently wrote and directed their own original film, Mayday. They were also writers on The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
A Monopoly film has been discussed for years, going back to reports in 2007 that Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing such a film. In 2011, Scott tapped Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script, but that version of the film just seemed to fizzle out. Then in 2015, Lionsgate and Hasbro teamed up on another version written by Andrew Niccol, and then it was reported in 2019 that actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved.
It sounds like absolutely none of that is coming to pass, though, since Lionsgate’s acquisition of eOne from Hasbro kickstarted efforts on such a film anew. Hopefully this version of the film passes Go.
